Abstract
The paper studies the «eternal story» reflected in the new novel by Dina Rubina «The Russian Canary». The story is represented by the image of a bird as a narrative phenomenon that organizes the text structure on the levels of imagery, composition and narration. The archetype of bird naturally enters the novel’s chronotope. The Russian canary acquires a metaphoric and iconic meaning.
It integrates the Story of the Prodigal Son into the picture of the modern world.
