Abstract
The article deals with the historical and socio-cultural factors of interest of Russian fiction of 1860–1890s to the image of the parish priest and the analysis of the main themes and motifs in his image. The biography of the clergy in fiction is compared with its own version of the biography, presented in the church memoirs.
